The Mexico Expedition Medal was created by the decree of August 29, 1863 and was awarded to all those who participated in the Expedition from 1862-1863. An estimated 90000 Medals were produced by the Monnaie de Paris. The obverse bearing the profile of Emperor Napoleon III surrounded by the relief inscription “NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR”, all within a laurel wreath, the reverse bearing the inscription CUMBRES CERRO-BORREGO SAN LORENZO PUEBLA MEXICO surrounded by the relief inscription EXPEDITION DU MEXIQUE 1862-3, hallmarked with an eagle's head on the reverse, 30.5 mm in diameter, on the original ribbon with an embroidered design bearing the Mexican eagle with snake.
